The main kick-off to sunny weather and time on the water takes place this weekend. Memorial Day is a reminder to brush up on boating safety and protection, including your watercraft insurance policy. USA Today estimated the number of boating accidents nearly triples on this busy holiday. With water crowded to the max, boat owners will quickly realize how important protection will be in the unfortunate case of an accident.

In addition to excessive vacationers and more boats in the water, you can expect alcohol to be consumed, adding another risk. So take just a few minutes to review your current watercraft policy or decide if you need to insure your watercraft for the busy summer season.

Watercraft policies generally cover bodily injury, property damage, guest passenger liability, medical payments and theft. Additional coverage is available for trailers and other watercraft accessories.

Making sure a boating inspection is complete before hitting the water is always important. Check the weather before heading out – you don’t want to be caught in a thunderstorm on the seas. Make sure your GPS is working properly. Encourage passengers to wear life jackets when on a watercraft. Lastly, be sure to designate a sober boat operator for your adventure. Coastline Insurance wishes you and your family a safe and fun Memorial Day weekend!
